Check out the great selection of artisan breads at the Monona Farmers Market. In fact, there are so many choices it’s hard to know which bread to choose and what pairs well with certain foods. The market bakery vendors have some suggestions.
If you are preparing soups, stews or chili, select a bread that soaks up the juices like the cheesy potato and chive bread from Violet Rose or the Hot ‘n Spicy Cheese bread from Stella’s Bakery. For over-the-top delicious French toast, try Stalzy’s Deli challah bread or the cranberry orange bread from Violet Rose. For a great BLT, pick up a loaf of rye. Try grilled brats with pretzel buns, burgers with hard rolls and pulled pork with butter buns from Stalzy’s. Slices of baguette that are buttered and lightly toasted on a skillet on one side and spread with bruschetta on the other make a great appetizer. For just a simple piece of bread and jam the Land of O’s vendor recommends light colored jam with white bread and dark jam with wheat bread. For menu ideas and help with your bread selection, talk with the vendors. They are the pros.
The market is loaded with mid-season favorites. You’ll find sweet corn, cherries, blueberries, melon, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, green beans, an assortment of root veggies, salad greens, onions, meat for the grill, cheese, flowers and more. There is an abundance of fresh, local produce.
This weeks live entertainment is Leafy Greens, two musicians who discovered they played the same instrument and decided to form a band. Enjoy the music of this ukulele-bearing, folk-rock duo.
