City of Monona Radio Station Awarded Station of the Year
WVMO LP, the city of Monona owned and licensed low-power radio station, was awarded the 2018 Large Market Music Radio Station of the Year by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association at their annual Awards Gala Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the Madison Marriott West in Middleton, WI.
98.7FM WVMO – The Voice of Monona, took home 11 awards in total, including 4 first place awards, 4 second place awards, 2 third place awards and Music Station of the Year. Among the first place awards, Volunteer Promotions Director, Becca Reynolds accepted the “Best Use of Social Media” award with her Facebook coverage of the 2018 flooding in Monona.
City of Monona Community Media Director, Will Nimmow is proud of what the all-volunteer station has accomplished and said “it wouldn’t have happened without the leadership from Wisconsin radio hall of famer, Lindsay Wood Davis.” Nimmow added that “the station’s strong programing and operations foundation came from Davis’s passion for hyper-local radio and his desire for the station to be the hub of the community wheel in Monona.” Nimmow said “it’s the uniqueness of Monona that helps to create such interesting programming.” Nimmow points to WVMO’s first place awards for The Monona Bird Report and The Wife Carry Broadcast, Best Newscast and Best Sports Coverage respectively, as examples.
Competition for the 2018 awards was strong. With an all-time high 1,786 award entries from 123 radio and television stations, the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Awards is one of the most competitive local broadcasting awards in the nation. “The WBA Awards highlight the best that Wisconsin’s radio and TV stations have to offer, including their tremendous service to their communities,” said WBA President and CEO Michelle Vetterkind.
WVMO programing and operations are run by Volunteer Music Director, Kirk Swenson, Volunteer Promotions Director Becca Reynolds, and Volunteer Traffic Manager Carol Hornung.
